Blue Heron Bridge 02/19/12

Brown Fan Worm

First Blue Heron dive of 2012.  Burrrr!  Actually it wasn’t too bad.  The worst thing was putting on a real (3mm) wetsuit.

Nothing out of the ordinary except for the red nudibranchs – thanks Linda!  Found several Jawfish (no eggs), two different species of Sea Robins, a tiny Bumblebee Shrimp on a purple urchin and a Stargazer which I took an abstract photo of.  At the very end off the beach I found a rock that was completely covered in some type of anemone.

All you can eat Shrimp Buffet

On a night dive in Anilao, Philippines, small transparent shrimp were swarming in my video lights. An octopus took advantage of the smorgasbord of fresh shrimp and was using all eight arms to catch them as fast as he could. Jim

Viera Wetlands & Merritt Island NWR

The sunrise casts an orange glow over Viera Wetlands as the morning fog begins to burn off.

We made a trip to Viera Wetlands on January 8th.  Fog transformed the wetlands each morning, adding interest to the scenery. But the highlight of the trip was the full moon rising over the nesting Great Blue Herons as the last light of day illuminated the birds.  We took an afternoon drive over to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and found beautiful Northern Shoveler ducks as well as a few Roseate Sponbills.  As we were leaving Viera on the last morning, an otter made an appearance in the distance.

Purple Gallinule searching the leaves for bugs

Visited Wakodahatchee in hopes of seeing Anne’s Wuderman’s heron.  The heron didn’t show up but I was thrilled to find a couple of Purple Gallinules feeding in the foliage.   It was late in the afternoon and very overcast so I used fill flash and a “Better Beamer” flash extender to bring out the colors of these beautiful birds.
